           InthemeanwhilethedayofCowperwood’strialwasdrawingnear.Hewasundertheimpressionthatanattemptwasgoingtobemadetoconvicthimwhetherthefactswarranteditornot.Hedidnotseeanywayoutofhisdilemma,however,unlessitwastoabandoneverythingandleavePhiladelphiaforgood,whichwasimpossible.Theonlywaytoguardhisfutureandretainhisfinancialfriendswastostandtrialasquicklyaspossible,andtrustthemtoassisthimtohisfeetinthefutureincasehefailed.HediscussedthepossibilitiesofanunfairtrialwithSteger,whodidnotseemtothinkthattherewassomuchtothat.Inthefirstplace,ajurycouldnoteasilybesubornedbyanyone.Inthenextplace,mostjudgeswerehonest,inspiteoftheirpoliticalcleavage,andwouldgonofurtherthanpartybiaswouldleadthemintheirrulingsandopinions,whichwas,inthemain,notsofar.Theparticularjudgewhowastositinthiscase,oneWilburPayderson,oftheCourtofQuarterSessions,wasastrictpartynominee,andassuchbeholdentoMollenhauer,Simpson,andButler;but,insofarasStegerhadeverheard,hewasanhonestman.

           "WhatIcan’tunderstand,"saidSteger,"iswhythesefellowsshouldbesoanxioustopunishyou,unlessitisfortheeffectontheStateatlarge.Theelection’sover.Iunderstandthere’samovementonnowtogetSteneroutincaseheisconvicted,whichhewillbe.Theyhavetotryhim.Hewon’tgoupformorethanayear,ortwoorthree,andifhedoeshe’llbepardonedoutinhalfthetimeorless.
