           ShevisitedthehouselargelybecauseshehadgonetoschoolwithMamieatSt.Agatha’s,whentheoutlookoftheCalliganfamilywasmuchmorepromising.Mamiewasearningfortydollarsamonthastheteacherofasixth-graderoominoneofthenearbypublicschools,andMrs.Calliganaveragedonthewholeabouttwodollarsadaysometimesnotsomuch.Thehousetheyoccupiedwastheirown,freeandclear,andthefurniturewhichitcontainedsuggestedthesizeoftheirjointincome,whichwassomewhereneareightydollarsamonth.

           MamieCalliganwasnotgood-looking,notnearlyasgood-lookingashermotherhadbeenbeforeher.Mrs.Calliganwasstillplump,bright,andcheerfulatfifty,withafundofgoodhumor.Mamiewassomewhatdullermentallyandemotionally.Shewasserious-mindedmadeso,perhaps,asmuchbycircumstancesasbyanythingelse,forshewasnotatallvivid,andhadlittlesexmagnetism.Yetshewaskindly,honest,earnest,agoodCatholic,andpossessedofthatstrangelyexcessiveingrowingvirtuewhichshutssomanypeopleofffromtheworldasenseofduty.ToMamieCalliganduty(aroutineconformitytosuchtheoriesandpreceptsasshehadheardandworkedbysinceherchildhood)wastheall-importantthing,herprincipalsourceofcomfortandrelief;herpropsinaqueeranduncertainworldbeingherdutytoherChurch;herdutytoherschool;herdutytohermother;herdutytoherfriends,etc.
