Howlongithadbeensearchingmethroughandthrough,andoverandover,Icannottell:sokeenwasit,andyetsocold,Ifeltforthemomentsuperstitious—asifIweresittingintheroomwithsomethinguncanny.

"IwantyoutogiveupGermanandlearnHindostanee."

HethenwentontoexplainthatHindostaneewasthelanguagehewashimselfatpresentstudying;that,asheadvanced,hewasapttoforgetthecommencement;thatitwouldassisthimgreatlytohaveapupilwithwhomhemightagainandagaingoovertheelements,andsofixthemthoroughlyinhismind; thathischoicehadhoveredforsometimebetweenmeandhissisters;butthathehadfixedonmebecausehesawIcouldsitatataskthelongestofthethree.
