Butthisisnottobearegularautobiography.IamonlyboundtoinvokeMemorywhereIknowherresponseswillpossesssomedegreeofinterest; thereforeInowpassaspaceofeightyearsalmostinsilence:afewlinesonlyarenecessarytokeepupthelinksofconnection.
WhenthetyphusfeverhadfulfilleditsmissionofdevastationatLowood,itgraduallydisappearedfromthence;butnottillitsvirulenceandthenumberofitsvictimshaddrawnpublicattentionontheschool. Inquirywasmadeintotheoriginofthescourge,andbydegreesvariousfactscameoutwhichexcitedpublicindignationinahighdegree. Theunhealthynatureofthesite;thequantityandqualityofthechildren’sfood;thebrackish,fetidwaterusedinitspreparation;thepupils’wretchedclothingandaccommodations—allthesethingswerediscovered,andthediscoveryproducedaresultmortifyingtoMr.Brocklehurst,butbeneficialtotheinstitution.
Severalwealthyandbenevolentindividualsinthecountysubscribedlargelyfortheerectionofamoreconvenientbuildinginabettersituation; newregulationsweremade;improvementsindietandclothingintroduced;thefundsoftheschoolwereintrustedtothemanagementofacommittee. Mr.Brocklehurst,who,fromhiswealthandfamilyconnections,couldnotbeoverlooked,stillretainedthepostoftreasurer;buthewasaidedinthedischargeofhisdutiesbygentlemenofrathermoreenlargedandsympathisingminds:hisofficeofinspector,too,wassharedbythosewhoknewhowtocombinereasonwithstrictness,comfortwitheconomy,compassionwithuprightness. Theschool,thusimproved,becameintimeatrulyusefulandnobleinstitution.
