           ForseveralsubsequentdaysIsawlittleofMr.Rochester. Inthemorningsheseemedmuchengagedwithbusiness,and,intheafternoon,gentlemenfromMillcoteortheneighbourhoodcalled,andsometimesstayedtodinewithhim. Whenhissprainwaswellenoughtoadmitofhorseexercise,herodeoutagooddeal;probablytoreturnthesevisits,ashegenerallydidnotcomebacktilllateatnight. 

           Duringthisinterval,evenAdelewasseldomsentfortohispresence,andallmyacquaintancewithhimwasconfinedtoanoccasionalrencontreinthehall,onthestairs,orinthegallery,whenhewouldsometimespassmehaughtilyandcoldly,justacknowledgingmypresencebyadistantnodoracoolglance,andsometimesbowandsmilewithgentlemanlikeaffability. Hischangesofmooddidnotoffendme,becauseIsawthatIhadnothingtodowiththeiralternation; theebbandflowdependedoncausesquitedisconnectedwithme. 

           Onedayhehadhadcompanytodinner,andhadsentformyportfolio;inorder,doubtless,toexhibititscontents: thegentlemenwentawayearly,toattendapublicmeetingatMillcote,asMrs.Fairfaxinformedme; butthenightbeingwetandinclement,Mr.Rochesterdidnotaccompanythem. Soonaftertheyweregoneherangthebell:amessagecamethatIandAdeleweretogodownstairs.
