           NotthatSt.Johnharbouredaspiritofunchristianvindictivenessnotthathewouldhaveinjuredahairofmyhead,ifithadbeenfullyinhispowertodoso. Bothbynatureandprinciple,hewassuperiortothemeangratificationofvengeance:hehadforgivenmeforsayingIscornedhimandhislove,buthehadnotforgottenthewords;andaslongasheandIlivedheneverwouldforgetthem. Isawbyhislook,whenheturnedtome,thattheywerealwayswrittenontheairbetweenmeandhim;wheneverIspoke,theysoundedinmyvoicetohisear,andtheirechotonedeveryanswerhegaveme.
