MyfirstquarteratLowoodseemedanage;andnotthegoldenageeither; itcomprisedanirksomestrugglewithdifficultiesinhabituatingmyselftonewrulesandunwontedtasks. Thefearoffailureinthesepointsharassedmeworsethanthephysicalhardshipsofmylot;thoughthesewerenotrifles.
DuringJanuary,February,andpartofMarch,thedeepsnows,and,aftertheirmelting,thealmostimpassableroads,preventedourstirringbeyondthegardenwalls,excepttogotochurch;butwithintheselimitswehadtopassanhoureverydayintheopenair. Ourclothingwasinsufficienttoprotectusfromtheseverecold:wehadnoboots,thesnowgotintoourshoesandmeltedthere:ourunglovedhandsbecamenumbedandcoveredwithchilblains,aswereourfeet: IrememberwellthedistractingirritationIenduredfromthiscauseeveryevening,whenmyfeetinflamed;andthetortureofthrustingtheswelled,raw,andstifftoesintomyshoesinthemorning. Thenthescantysupplyoffoodwasdistressing:withthekeenappetitesofgrowingchildren,wehadscarcelysufficienttokeepaliveadelicateinvalid. Fromthisdeficiencyofnourishmentresultedanabuse,whichpressedhardlyontheyoungerpupils:wheneverthefamishedgreatgirlshadanopportunity,theywouldcoaxormenacethelittleonesoutoftheirportion. ManyatimeIhavesharedbetweentwoclaimantsthepreciousmorselofbrownbreaddistributedattea-time;andafterrelinquishingtoathirdhalfthecontentsofmymugofcoffee,Ihaveswallowedtheremainderwithanaccompanimentofsecrettears,forcedfrommebytheexigencyofhunger.
