Mrs.FairfaxsaidsheshouldnotbesurprisedifheweretogostraightfromtheLeastoLondon,andthencetotheContinent,andnotshowhisfaceagainatThornfieldforayeartocome;hehadnotunfrequentlyquitteditinamannerquiteasabruptandunexpected. WhenIheardthis,Iwasbeginningtofeelastrangechillandfailingattheheart. Iwasactuallypermittingmyselftoexperienceasickeningsenseofdisappointment;butrallyingmywits,andrecollectingmyprinciples,Iatoncecalledmysensationstoorder; anditwaswonderfulhowIgotoverthetemporaryblunder—howIclearedupthemistakeofsupposingMr.Rochester’smovementsamatterinwhichIhadanycausetotakeavitalinterest. NotthatIhumbledmyselfbyaslavishnotionofinferiority:onthecontrary,Ijustsaid—
"YouhavenothingtodowiththemasterofThornfield,furtherthantoreceivethesalaryhegivesyouforteachinghisprotegee,andtobegratefulforsuchrespectfulandkindtreatmentas,ifyoudoyourduty,youhavearighttoexpectathishands. Besurethatistheonlytieheseriouslyacknowledgesbetweenyouandhim; sodon’tmakehimtheobjectofyourfinefeelings,yourraptures,agonies,andsoforth. Heisnotofyourorder:keeptoyourcaste,andbetooself-respectingtolavishtheloveofthewholeheart,soul,andstrength,wheresuchagiftisnotwantedandwouldbedespised."
