WhileMarydrew,Dianapursuedacourseofencyclopaedicreadingshehad(tomyaweandamazement)undertaken,andIfaggedawayatGerman,heponderedamysticloreofhisown:thatofsomeEasterntongue,theacquisitionofwhichhethoughtnecessarytohisplans.
Thusengaged,heappeared,sittinginhisownrecess,quietandabsorbedenough;butthatblueeyeofhishadahabitofleavingtheoutlandish-lookinggrammar,andwanderingover,andsometimesfixinguponus,hisfellow-students,withacuriousintensityofobservation:ifcaught,itwouldbeinstantlywithdrawn; yeteverandanon,itreturnedsearchinglytoourtable.
