           Hewasmoody,too;unaccountablyso; Imorethanonce,whensentfortoreadtohim,foundhimsittinginhislibraryalone,withhisheadbentonhisfoldedarms;and,whenhelookedup,amorose,almostamalignant,scowlblackenedhisfeatures. ButIbelievedthathismoodiness,hisharshness,andhisformerfaultsofmorality(Isayformer,fornowheseemedcorrectedofthem)hadtheirsourceinsomecruelcrossoffate. Ibelievedhewasnaturallyamanofbettertendencies,higherprinciples,andpurertastesthansuchascircumstanceshaddeveloped,educationinstilled,ordestinyencouraged. Ithoughttherewereexcellentmaterialsinhim;thoughforthepresenttheyhungtogethersomewhatspoiledandtangled. IcannotdenythatIgrievedforhisgrief,whateverthatwas,andwouldhavegivenmuchtoassuageit. 

           ThoughIhadnowextinguishedmycandleandwaslaiddowninbed,Icouldnotsleepforthinkingofhislookwhenhepausedintheavenue,andtoldhowhisdestinyhadrisenupbeforehim,anddaredhimtobehappyatThornfield. 

           "Whynot?"Iaskedmyself."Whatalienateshimfromthehouse?Willheleaveitagainsoon? Mrs.Fairfaxsaidheseldomstayedherelongerthanafortnightatatime;andhehasnowbeenresidenteightweeks. Ifhedoesgo,thechangewillbedoleful.
