           Thisdone,Ilingeredyetalittlelonger:theflowerssmeltsosweetasthedewfell;itwassuchapleasantevening,soserene,sowarm;thestillglowingwestpromisedsofairlyanotherfinedayonthemorrow;themoonrosewithsuchmajestyinthegraveeast. Iwasnotingthesethingsandenjoyingthemasachildmight,whenitenteredmymindasithadneverdonebefore:- 

           "Howsadtobelyingnowonasickbed,andtobeindangerofdying! Thisworldispleasantitwouldbedrearytobecalledfromit,andtohavetogowhoknowswhere?" 

           Andthenmymindmadeitsfirstearnestefforttocomprehendwhathadbeeninfusedintoitconcerningheavenandhell;andforthefirsttimeitrecoiled,baffled;andforthefirsttimeglancingbehind,oneachside,andbeforeit,itsawallroundanunfathomedgulf: itfelttheonepointwhereitstoodthepresent;alltherestwasformlesscloudandvacantdepth;anditshudderedatthethoughtoftottering,andplungingamidthatchaos. Whileponderingthisnewidea,Iheardthefrontdooropen;Mr.Batescameout,andwithhimwasanurse. Aftershehadseenhimmounthishorseanddepart,shewasabouttoclosethedoor,butIranuptoher. 

           "HowisHelenBurns?" 

           "Verypoorly,"wastheanswer. 

           "IsitherMr.Bateshasbeentosee?" 

           "Yes." 

           "Andwhatdoeshesayabouther?"
