           Ontheflooroftheroom,amaninabroad-skirtedgreencoat,withcorduroyknee-smallsandgraycottonstockings,wasperformingthemostpopularstepsofahornpipe,withaslangandburlesquecaricatureofgraceandlightness,which,combinedwiththeveryappropriatecharacterofhiscostume,wasinexpressiblyabsurd.Anotherman,evidentlyverydrunk,whohadprobablybeentumbledintobedbyhiscompanions,wassittingupbetweenthesheets,warblingasmuchashecouldrecollectofacomicsong,withthemostintenselysentimentalfeelingandexpression;whileathird,seatedononeofthebedsteads,wasapplaudingbothperformerswiththeairofaprofoundconnoisseur,andencouragingthembysuchebullitionsoffeelingashadalreadyrousedMr.Pickwickfromhissleep.

           Thislastmanwasanadmirablespecimenofaclassofgentrywhichnevercanbeseeninfullperfectionbutinsuchplacestheymaybemetwith,inanimperfectstate,occasionallyaboutstable-yardsandPublic-houses;buttheyneverattaintheirfullbloomexceptinthesehot-beds,whichwouldalmostseemtobeconsideratelyprovidedbythelegislatureforthesolepurposeofrearingthem.

           Hewasatallfellow,withanolivecomplexion,longdarkhair,andverythickbushywhiskersmeetingunderhischin.Heworenoneckerchief,ashehadbeenplayingracketsallday,andhisOpenshirtcollardisplayedtheirfullluxuriance.
