           AfterafewthoughtfulturnsinthePaintedGround,which,asitwasnowdark,wasnearlydeserted,heintimatedtoMr.Wellerthathethoughtithightimeforhimtowithdrawforthenight;requestinghimtoseekabedinsomeadjacentpublic–house,andreturnearlyinthemorning,tomakearrangementsfortheremovalofhismaster’swardrobefromtheGeorgeandVulture.ThisrequestMr.SamuelWellerpreparedtoobey,withasgoodagraceashecouldassume,butwithaveryconsiderableshowofreluctancenevertheless.Heevenwentsofarastoessaysundryineffectualhintsregardingtheexpediencyofstretchinghimselfonthegravelforthatnight;butfindingMr.Pickwickobstinatelydeaftoanysuchsuggestions,finallywithdrew.

           ThereisnodisguisingthefactthatMr.Pickwickfeltverylow-spiritedanduncomfortablenotforlackofsociety,fortheprisonwasveryfull,andabottleofwinewouldatoncehavepurchasedtheutmostgood-fellowshipofafewchoicespirits,withoutanymoreformalceremonyofintroduction;buthewasaloneinthecoarse,vulgarcrowd,andfeltthedepressionofspiritsandsinkingofheart,naturallyconsequentonthereflectionthathewascoopedandcagedup,withoutaprospectofliberation.AstotheideaofreleasinghimselfbyministeringtothesharpnessofDodson&Fogg,itneverforaninstantenteredhisthoughts.

           Inthisframeofmindheturnedagainintothecoffee-roomgallery,andwalkedslowlytoandfro.
