           Havinginformedhimthatthecapturewasmade,andthathewastowaitfortheprisoneruntilheshouldhavefinisheddressing,Nambythenswaggeredout,anddroveaway.Smouch,requestingMr.Pickwickinasurlymanner‘tobeasaliveashecould,foritwasabusytime,’drewupachairbythedoorandsatthere,untilhehadfinisheddressing.Samwasthendespatchedforahackney-coach,andinitthetriumvirateproceededtoColemanStreet.Itwasfortunatethedistancewasshort;forMr.Smouch,besidespossessingnoveryenchantingconversationalpowers,wasrenderedadecidedlyunpleasantcompanioninalimitedspace,bythephysicalweaknesstowhichwehaveelsewhereadverted.

           Thecoachhavingturnedintoaverynarrowanddarkstreet,stoppedbeforeahousewithironbarstoallthewindows;thedoor-postsofwhichweregracedbythenameandtitleof‘Namby,OfficertotheSheriffsofLondon’;theinnergatehavingbeenopenedbyagentlemanwhomighthavepassedforaneglectedtwin-brotherofMr.Smouch,andwhowasendowedwithalargekeyforthepurpose,Mr.Pickwickwasshownintothe‘coffee-room.’

           Thiscoffee-roomwasafrontparlour,theprincipalfeaturesofwhichwerefreshsandandstaletobaccosmoke.Mr.Pickwickbowedtothethreepersonswhowereseatedinitwhenheentered;andhavingdespatchedSamforPerker,withdrewintoanobscurecorner,andlookedthencewithsomecuriosityuponhisnewcompanions.
