           Whilethesethingsweregoingonintheopenair,anelderlygentlemanofscientificattainmentswasseatedinhislibrary,twoorthreehousesoff,writingaphilosophicaltreatise,andeverandanonmoisteninghisclayandhislabourswithaglassofclaretfromavenerable-lookingbottlewhichstoodbyhisside.Intheagoniesofcomposition,theelderlygentlemanlookedsometimesatthecarpet,sometimesattheceiling,andsometimesatthewall;andwhenneithercarpet,ceiling,norwallaffordedtherequisitedegreeofinspiration,helookedoutofthewindow.

           Theywerenotmeteors;theyweretoolow.Theywerenotglow-worms;theyweretoohigh.
