Abouthalf-pasttwelveo’clock,whenMr.Winklehadbeenrevellingsometwentyminutesinthefullluxuryofhisfirstsleep,hewassuddenlyawakenedbyaloudknockingathischamberdoor,which,beingrepeatedwithincreasedvehemence,causedhimtostartupinbed,andinquirewhowasthere,andwhatthematterwas.
‘Please,Sir,here’sayoungmanwhichsayshemustseeyoudirectly,’respondedthevoiceofthechambermaid.
‘Ayoungman!’exclaimedMr.Winkle.
