Firstofall,itwasnecessarytoawakenthegirl,whohadfallenasleepwithherfaceonthekitchentable;thistookalittletime,and,evenwhenshedidanswerthebell,anotherquarterofanhourwasconsumedinfruitlessendeavourstoimparttoherafaintanddistantglimmeringofreason.Themantowhomtheorderfortheoystershadbeensent,hadnotbeentoldtoopenthem;itisaverydifficultthingtoopenanoysterwithalimpknifeandatwo-prongedfork;andverylittlewasdoneinthisway.Verylittleofthebeefwasdoneeither;andtheham(whichwasalsofromtheGerman-sausageshoproundthecorner)wasinasimilarpredicament.However,therewasplentyofporterinatincan;andthecheesewentagreatway,foritwasverystrong.Souponthewhole,perhaps,thesupperwasquiteasgoodassuchmattersusuallyare.
Aftersupper,anotherjugofpunchwasputuponthetable,togetherwithapaperofcigars,andacoupleofbottlesofspirits.Thentherewasanawfulpause;andthisawfulpausewasoccasionedbyaverycommonoccurrenceinthissortofplace,butaveryembarrassingonenotwithstanding.
Thefactis,thegirlwaswashingtheglasses.Theestablishmentboastedfour:wedonotrecordthecircumstanceasatallderogatorytoMrs.Raddle,forthereneverwasalodging-houseyet,thatwasnotshortofglasses.
