BobSawyerlookedexpressivelyathisfriend,andbadethetappercomein;whereuponadirty,slipshodgirlinblackcottonstockings,whomighthavepassedfortheneglecteddaughterofasuperannuateddustmaninveryreducedcircumstances,thrustinherhead,andsaid—
‘Please,MisterSawyer,MissisRaddlewantstospeaktoyou.’
BeforeMr.BobSawyercouldreturnanyanswer,thegirlsuddenlydisappearedwithajerk,asifsomebodyhadgivenheraviolentpullbehind;thismysteriousexitwasnosooneraccomplished,thantherewasanothertapatthedoor—asmart,pointedtap,whichseemedtosay,‘HereIam,andinI’mcoming.’
Mr,BobSawyerglancedathisfriendwithalookofabjectapprehension,andoncemorecried,‘Comein.’
Thepermissionwasnotatallnecessary,for,beforeMr.BobSawyerhadutteredthewords,alittle,fiercewomanbouncedintotheroom,allinatremblewithpassion,andpalewithrage.
‘Now,Mr.Sawyer,’saidthelittle,fiercewoman,tryingtoappearverycalm,‘ifyou’llhavethekindnesstosettlethatlittlebillofmineI’llthankyou,becauseI’vegotmyrenttopaythisafternoon,andmylandlord’sa-waitingbelownow.’Herethelittlewomanrubbedherhands,andlookedsteadilyoverMr.BobSawyer’shead,atthewallbehindhim.
