AsMr.Wellerconcludedthismoraltale,withwhichthefatboyappearedmuchaffected,theyallthreerepairedtothelargekitchen,inwhichthefamilywerebythistimeassembled,accordingtoannualcustomonChristmasEve,observedbyoldWardle’sforefathersfromtimeimmemorial.
Fromthecentreoftheceilingofthiskitchen,oldWardlehadjustsuspended,withhisownhands,ahugebranchofmistletoe,andthissamebranchofmistletoeinstantaneouslygaverisetoasceneofgeneralandmostdelightfulstrugglingandconfusion;inthemidstofwhich,Mr.Pickwick,withagallantrythatwouldhavedonehonourtoadescendantofLadyTollimglowerherself,tooktheoldladybythehand,ledherbeneaththemysticbranch,andsalutedherinallcourtesyanddecorum.
