‘ThemanofwhomIspeakwasalowpantomimeactor;and,likemanypeopleofhisclass,anhabitualdrunkard.inhisbetterdays,beforehehadbecomeenfeebledbydissipationandemaciatedbydisease,hehadbeeninthereceiptofagoodsalary,which,ifhehadbeencarefulandprudent,hemighthavecontinuedtoreceiveforsomeyears—notmany;becausethesemeneitherdieearly,orbyunnaturallytaxingtheirbodilyenergies,lose,prematurely,thosephysicalpowersonwhichalonetheycandependforsubsistence.Hisbesettingsingainedsofastuponhim,however,thatitwasfoundimpossibletoemployhiminthesituationsinwhichhereallywasusefultothetheatre.Thepublic-househadafascinationforhimwhichhecouldnotresist.Neglecteddiseaseandhopelesspovertywereascertaintobehisportionasdeathitself,ifheperseveredinthesamecourse;yethedidpersevere,andtheresultmaybeguessed.Hecouldobtainnoengagement,andhewantedbread.
