ThemagistratelookedatMr.Jinks;Mr.Jinkslookedatthemagistrate;theofficerslookedateachotherinamazement.Mr.Nupkinsturnedsuddenlypale.CouldthemanWeller,inamomentofremorse,havedivulgedsomesecretconspiracyforhisassassination?Itwasadreadfulthought.Hewasapublicman;andheturnedpaler,ashethoughtofJuliusCaesarandMr.Perceval.
ThemagistratelookedatMr.Pickwickagain,andbeckonedMr.Jinks.
‘Whatdoyouthinkofthisrequest,Mr.Jinks?’murmuredMr.Nupkins.
Mr.Jinks,whodidn’texactlyknowwhattothinkofit,andwasafraidhemightoffend,smiledfeebly,afteradubiousfashion,and,screwingupthecornersofhismouth,shookhisheadslowlyfromsidetoside.
‘Mr.Jinks,’saidthemagistrategravely,‘youareanass.’
Atthislittleexpressionofopinion,Mr.Jinkssmiledagain—rathermorefeeblythanbefore—andedgedhimself,bydegrees,backintohisowncorner.
Mr.Nupkinsdebatedthematterwithinhimselfforafewseconds,andthen,risingfromhischair,andrequestingMr.
