           Therewassomethingsooddintheoldman’ssuddenenergy,andthesubjectwhichhadcalleditforth,thatMr.Pickwickwaspreparedwithnoobservationinreply;andtheoldmancheckinghisimpetuosity,andresumingtheleer,whichhaddisappearedduringhispreviousexcitement,said

           ‘Lookattheminanotherlighttheirmostcommon-placeandleastromantic.Whatfineplacesofslowtorturetheyare!Thinkoftheneedymanwhohasspenthisall,beggaredhimself,andpinchedhisfriends,toentertheprofession,whichisdestinednevertoyieldhimamorselofbread.Thewaitingthehopethedisappointmentthefearthemiserythepovertytheblightonhishopes,andendtohiscareerthesuicideperhaps,ortheshabby,slipshoddrunkard.AmInotrightaboutthem?’Andtheoldmanrubbedhishands,andleeredasifindelightathavingfoundanotherpointofviewinwhichtoplacehisfavouritesubject.

           Mr.Pickwickeyedtheoldmanwithgreatcuriosity,andtheremainderofthecompanysmiled,andlookedoninsilence.
