           ‘Whoisshe?’inquiredMr.Tupman.

           ‘Don’tknowneversawherinallmylifecutoutthedoctorheregoes.’Andthestrangerforthwithcrossedtheroom;and,leaningagainstamantel-piece,commencedgazingwithanairofrespectfulandmelancholyadmirationonthefatcountenanceofthelittleoldlady.Mr.Tupmanlookedon,inmuteastonishment.Thestrangerprogressedrapidly;thelittledoctordancedwithanotherlady;thewidowdroppedherfan;thestrangerpickeditup,andpresenteditasmileabowacurtseyafewwordsofconversation.Thestrangerwalkedboldlyupto,andreturnedwith,themasteroftheceremonies;alittleintroductorypantomime;andthestrangerandMrs.Budgertooktheirplacesinaquadrille.

           ThesurpriseofMr.Tupmanatthissummaryproceeding,greatasitwas,wasimmeasurablyexceededbytheastonishmentofthedoctor.Thestrangerwasyoung,andthewidowwasflattered.Thedoctor’sattentionswereunheededbythewidow;andthedoctor’sindignationwaswhollylostonhisimperturbablerival.DoctorSlammerwasparalysed.
