Pickwick’sconditionatthismoment:hetossedfirstononesideandthenontheother;andperseveringlyclosedhiseyesasiftocoaxhimselftoslumber.Itwasofnouse.Whetheritwastheunwontedexertionhehadundergone,ortheheat,orthebrandy-and-water,orthestrangebed—whateveritwas,histhoughtskeptrevertingveryuncomfortablytothegrimpicturesdownstairs,andtheoldstoriestowhichtheyhadgivenriseinthecourseoftheevening.Afterhalfanhour’stumblingabout,hecametotheunsatisfactoryconclusion,thatitwasofnousetryingtosleep;sohegotupandpartiallydressedhimself.Anything,hethought,wasbetterthanlyingtherefancyingallkindsofhorrors.Helookedoutofthewindow—itwasverydark.Hewalkedabouttheroom—itwasverylonely.
Hehadtakenafewturnsfromthedoortothewindow,andfromthewindowtothedoor,whentheclergyman’smanuscriptforthefirsttimeenteredhishead.Itwasagoodthought.ifitfailedtointeresthim,itmightsendhimtosleep.Hetookitfromhiscoatpocket,anddrawingasmalltabletowardshisbedside,trimmedthelight,putonhisspectacles,andcomposedhimselftoread.Itwasastrangehandwriting,andthepaperwasmuchsoiledandblotted.Thetitlegavehimasuddenstart,too;andhecouldnotavoidcastingawistfulglanceroundtheroom.
