           TheexultationandjoyofthePickwickiansknewnobounds,whentheirpatienceandassiduity,theirwashingandscraping,werecrownedwithsuccess.Thestonewasunevenandbroken,andtheletterswerestragglingandirregular,butthefollowingfragmentofaninscriptionwasclearlytobedeciphered:—

           [cross]BILSTumPSHIS.M.ARKMr.Pickwick’seyessparkledwithdelight,ashesatandgloatedoverthetreasurehehaddiscovered.Hehadattainedoneofthegreatestobjectsofhisambition.Inacountyknowntoaboundintheremainsoftheearlyages;inavillageinwhichtherestillexistedsomememorialsoftheoldentime,hehe,thechairmanofthePickwickClubhaddiscoveredastrangeandcuriousinscriptionofunquestionableantiquity,whichhadwhollyescapedtheobservationofthemanylearnedmenwhohadprecededhim.Hecouldhardlytrusttheevidenceofhissenses.

           ‘Thisthis,’saidhe,‘determinesme.Wereturntotownto-morrow.’

           ‘To-morrow!’exclaimedhisadmiringfollowers.

           ‘To-morrow,’saidMr.Pickwick.‘Thistreasuremustbeatoncedepositedwhereitcanbethoroughlyinvestigatedandproperlyunderstood.Ihaveanotherreasonforthisstep.Inafewdays,anelectionistotakeplacefortheboroughofEatanswill,atwhichMr.Perker,agentlemanwhomIlatelymet,istheagentofoneofthecandidates.Wewillbehold,andminutelyexamine,ascenesointerestingtoeveryEnglishman.
