           ‘Thenhere,’saidtheoldgentleman,‘isalittlemanuscript,whichIhadhopedtohavethepleasureofreadingtoyoumyself.Ifounditonthedeathofafriendofmineamedicalman,engagedinourcountylunaticasylumamongavarietyofpapers,whichIhadtheoptionofdestroyingorpreserving,asIthoughtproper.Icanhardlybelievethatthemanuscriptisgenuine,thoughitcertainlyisnotinmyfriend’shand.However,whetheritbethegenuineproductionofamaniac,orfoundedupontheravingsofsomeunhappybeing(whichIthinkmoreprobable),readit,andjudgeforyourself.’

           Mr.Pickwickreceivedthemanuscript,andpartedfromthebenevolentoldgentlemanwithmanyexpressionsofgood-willandesteem.

           ItwasamoredifficulttasktotakeleaveoftheinmatesofManorFarm,fromwhomtheyhadreceivedsomuchhospitalityandkindness.Mr.Pickwickkissedtheyoungladiesweweregoingtosay,asiftheywerehisowndaughters,only,ashemightpossiblyhaveinfusedalittlemorewarmthintothesalutation,thecomparisonwouldnotbequiteappropriatehuggedtheoldladywithfilialcordiality;andpattedtherosycheeksofthefemaleservantsinamostpatriarchalmanner,asheslippedintothehandsofeachsomemoresubstantialexpressionofhisapproval.TheexchangeofcordialitieswiththeirfineoldhostandMr.Trundlewasevenmoreheartyandprolonged;anditwasnotuntilMr.
