           ‘WinkleSnodgrass,’saidMr.Pickwick;‘whatdoesthismean?Whereisourfriend?Whathashappened?SpeakIconjure,Ientreatnay,Icommandyou,speak.’

           TherewasasolemnityadignityinMr.Pickwick’smanner,nottobewithstood.

           ‘Heisgone,’saidMr.Snodgrass.

           ‘Gone!’exclaimedMr.Pickwick.‘Gone!’

           ‘Gone,’repeatedMr.Snodgrass.

           ‘Where!’ejaculatedMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Wecanonlyguess,fromthatcommunication,’repliedMr.Snodgrass,takingaletterfromhispocket,andplacingitinhisfriend’shand.‘Yesterdaymorning,whenaletterwasreceivedfromMr.Wardle,statingthatyouwouldbehomewithhissisteratnight,themelancholywhichhadhungoverourfriendduringthewholeofthepreviousday,wasobservedtoincrease.Heshortlyafterwardsdisappeared:hewasmissingduringthewholeday,andintheeveningthisletterwasbroughtbythehostlerfromtheCrown,atMuggleton.Ithadbeenleftinhischargeinthemorning,withastrictinjunctionthatitshouldnotbedelivereduntilnight.’

           Mr.Pickwickopenedtheepistle.Itwasinhisfriend’shand-writing,andthesewereitscontents:—

           ‘MYDEARPICKWICKYOU,mydearfriend,areplacedfarbeyondthereachofmanymortalfrailtiesandweaknesseswhichordinarypeoplecannotovercome.
