           Inthisstrain,withanoccasionalglassofale,bywayofparenthesis,whenthecoachchangedhorses,didthestrangerproceed,untiltheyreachedRochesterbridge,bywhichtimethenote-books,bothofMr.PickwickandMr.Snodgrass,werecompletelyfilledwithselectionsfromhisadventures.

           ‘Magnificentruin!’saidMr.AugustusSnodgrass,withallthepoeticfervourthatdistinguishedhim,whentheycameinsightofthefineoldcastle.

           ‘Whatasightforanantiquarian!’weretheverywordswhichfellfromMr.Pickwick’smouth,asheappliedhistelescopetohiseye.
