Itwasintheyardofoneoftheseinns—ofnolesscelebratedaonethantheWhiteHart—thatamanwasbusilyemployedinbrushingthedirtoffapairofboots,earlyonthemorningsucceedingtheeventsnarratedinthelastchapter.Hewashabitedinacoarse,stripedwaistcoat,withblackcalicosleeves,andblueglassbuttons;drabbreechesandleggings.Abrightredhandkerchiefwaswoundinaverylooseandunstudiedstyleroundhisneck,andanoldwhitehatwascarelesslythrownononesideofhishead.Thereweretworowsofbootsbeforehim,onecleanedandtheotherdirty,andateveryadditionhemadetothecleanrow,hepausedfromhiswork,andcontemplateditsresultswithevidentsatisfaction.
Theyardpresentednoneofthatbustleandactivitywhicharetheusualcharacteristicsofalargecoachinn.Threeorfourlumberingwagons,eachwithapileofgoodsbeneathitsamplecanopy,abouttheheightofthesecond-floorwindowofanordinaryhouse,werestowedawaybeneathaloftyroofwhichextendedoveroneendoftheyard;andanother,whichwasprobablytocommenceitsjourneythatmorning,wasdrawnoutintotheopenspace.Adoubletierofbedroomgalleries,witholdClumsybalustrades,ranroundtwosidesofthestragglingarea,andadoublerowofbellstocorrespond,shelteredfromtheweatherbyalittleslopingroof,hungoverthedoorleadingtothebarandcoffee-room.
