A Discovery and a Chase

           Afteraveryfewsecondsofbewildermentandconfusion,inwhichnothingbuttheplungingofhorses,andbreakingofglasscouldbemadeout,Mr.Pickwickfelthimselfviolentlypulledoutfromamongtheruinsofthechaise;andassoonashehadgainedhisfeet,extricatedhisheadfromtheskirtsofhisgreatcoat,whichmateriallyimpededtheusefulnessofhisspectacles,thefulldisasterofthecasemethisview.

           OldMr.Wardlewithoutahat,andhisclothestorninseveralplaces,stoodbyhisside,andthefragmentsofthechaiselayscatteredattheirfeet.Thepost-boys,whohadsucceededincuttingthetraces,werestanding,disfiguredwithmudanddisorderedbyhardriding,bythehorses’heads.Aboutahundredyardsinadvancewastheotherchaise,whichhadpulleduponhearingthecrash.Thepostillions,eachwithabroadgrinconvulsinghiscountenance,wereviewingtheadversepartyfromtheirsaddles,andMr.Jinglewascontemplatingthewreckfromthecoachwindow,withevidentsatisfaction.Thedaywasjustbreaking,andthewholescenewasrenderedperfectlyvisiblebythegreylightofthemorning.

           ‘Hollo!’shoutedtheshamelessJingle,‘anybodydamaged?elderlygentlemennolightweightsdangerousworkvery.
