           Breakfastisannounced.Mr.Pickwickleadstheoldlady(whohasbeenveryeloquentonthesubjectofLadyTollimglower)tothetopofalongtable;Wardletakesthebottom;thefriendsarrangethemselvesoneitherside;Samtakeshisstationbehindhismaster’schair;thelaughterandtalkingcease;Mr.Pickwick,havingsaidgrace,pausesforaninstantandlooksroundhim.Ashedoesso,thetearsrolldownhischeeks,inthefullnessofhisjoy.

           Letusleaveouroldfriendinoneofthosemomentsofunmixedhappiness,ofwhich,ifweseekthem,thereareeversome,tocheerourtransitoryexistencehere.Therearedarkshadowsontheearth,butitslightsarestrongerinthecontrast.Somemen,likebatsorowls,havebettereyesforthedarknessthanforthelight.We,whohavenosuchopticalpowers,arebetterpleasedtotakeourlastpartinglookatthevisionarycompanionsofmanysolitaryhours,whenthebriefsunshineoftheworldisblazingfulluponthem.
