           Ihaveengaged,onPerker’srepresentation,ahousekeeperaveryoldoneandsuchotherservantsasshethinksIshallrequire.Iproposetoconsecratethislittleretreat,byhavingaceremonyinwhichItakeagreatinterest,performedthere.Iwish,ifmyfriendWardleentertainsnoobjection,thathisdaughtershouldbemarriedfrommynewhouse,onthedayItakepossessionofit.Thehappinessofyoungpeople,’saidMr.Pickwick,alittlemoved,‘haseverbeenthechiefpleasureofmylife.Itwillwarmmyhearttowitnessthehappinessofthosefriendswhoaredearesttome,beneathmyownroof.’

           Mr.Pickwickpausedagain:EmilyandArabellasobbedaudibly.

           ‘Ihavecommunicated,bothpersonallyandbyletter,withtheclub,’resumedMr.Pickwick,‘acquaintingthemwithmyintention.Duringourlongabsence,ithassufferedmuchfrominternaldissentions;andthewithdrawalofmyname,coupledwiththisandothercircumstances,hasoccasioneditsdissolution.ThePickwickClubexistsnolonger.

           ‘Ishallneverregret,’saidMr.Pickwickinalowvoice,‘Ishallneverregrethavingdevotedthegreaterpartoftwoyearstomixingwithdifferentvarietiesandshadesofhumancharacter,frivolousasmypursuitofnoveltymayhaveappearedtomany.
