Thefatboywentintothenextroom;and,havingbeenabsentaboutaminute,returnedwiththesnuff-box,andthepalestfacethateverafatboywore.
‘What’sthematterwiththeboy?’exclaimedWardle.
‘Nothen’sthematterwithme,’repliedJoenervously.
‘Haveyoubeenseeinganyspirits?’inquiredtheoldgentleman.
‘Ortakingany?’addedBenAllen.
‘Ithinkyou’reright,’whisperedWardleacrossthetable.‘Heisintoxicated,I’msure.’
BenAllenrepliedthathethoughthewas;and,asthatgentlemanhadseenavastdealofthediseaseinquestion,Wardlewasconfirmedinanimpressionwhichhadbeenhoveringabouthismindforhalfanhour,andatoncearrivedattheconclusionthatthefatboywasdrunk.
