           Therubberwasconductedwithallthatgravityofdeportmentandsedatenessofdemeanourwhichbefitthepursuitentitled‘whist’asolemnobservance,towhich,asitappearstous,thetitleof‘game’hasbeenveryirreverentlyandignominiouslyapplied.Theround-gametable,ontheotherhand,wassoboisterouslymerryasmateriallytointerruptthecontemplationsofMr.Miller,who,notbeingquitesomuchabsorbedasheoughttohavebeen,contrivedtocommitvarioushighcrimesandmisdemeanours,whichexcitedthewrathofthefatgentlemantoaverygreatextent,andcalledforththegood-humouroftheoldladyinaproportionatedegree.

           ‘There!’saidthecriminalMillertriumphantly,ashetookuptheoddtrickattheconclusionofahand;‘thatcouldnothavebeenplayedbetter,Iflattermyself;impossibletohavemadeanothertrick!’

           ‘Milleroughttohavetrumpedthediamond,oughtn’the,Sir?’saidtheoldlady.

           Mr.Pickwicknoddedassent.

           ‘OughtI,though?’saidtheunfortunate,withadoubtfulappealtohispartner.

           ‘Youought,Sir,’saidthefatgentleman,inanawfulvoice.
