           ‘Mr.Perker,sir,’saidSam,announcingthevisitortoMr.Pickwick,whowassittingatthewindowinathoughtfulattitude.‘Werygladyou’velookedinaccidentally,Sir.Iratherthinkthegov’norwantstohaveawordandahalfwithyou,Sir.’

           PerkerbestowedalookofintelligenceonSam,intimatingthatheunderstoodhewasnottosayhehadbeensentfor;andbeckoninghimtoapproach,whisperedbrieflyinhisear.

           ‘Youdon’tmeanthat‘ere,Sir?’saidSam,startingbackinexcessivesurprise.

           Perkernoddedandsmiled.

           Mr.SamuelWellerlookedatthelittlelawyer,thenatMr.Pickwick,thenattheceiling,thenatPerkeragain;grinned,laughedoutright,andfinally,catchinguphishatfromthecarpet,withoutfurtherexplanation,disappeared.

           ‘Whatdoesthismean?’inquiredMr.Pickwick,lookingatPerkerwithastonishment.‘WhathasputSamintothisextraordinarystate?’

           ‘Oh,nothing,nothing,’repliedPerker.‘Come,mydearSir,drawupyourchairtothetable.Ihaveagooddealtosaytoyou.’

           ‘Whatpapersarethose?’inquiredMr.Pickwick,asthelittlemandepositedonthetableasmallbundleofdocumentstiedwithredtape.
