Thusexpressinghimself,Mr.Pickwickledtheconversationtodifferenttopics,andMr.Winklegraduallyappearedmoreatease,thoughstillveryfarfrombeingcompletelyso.Theyhadallsomuchtoconverseabout,thatthemorningveryquicklypassedaway;andwhen,atthreeo’clock,Mr.Wellerproduceduponthelittledining-table,aroastlegofmuttonandanenormousmeat-pie,withsundrydishesofvegetables,andpotsofporter,whichstooduponthechairsorthesofabedstead,orwheretheycould,everybodyfeltdisposedtodojusticetothemeal,notwithstandingthatthemeathadbeenpurchased,anddressed,andthepiemade,andbaked,attheprisoncookeryhardby.
Tothesesucceededabottleortwoofverygoodwine,forwhichamessengerwasdespatchedbyMr.PickwicktotheHornCoffee-house,inDoctors’Commons.Thebottleortwo,indeed,mightbemoreproperlydescribedasabottleorsix,forbythetimeitwasdrunk,andteaover,thebellbegantoringforstrangerstowithdraw.
