           ‘Come,come,’saidSam,‘thatvon’tdo.Iwishsomerichenemy’udtrytovorkmydestructioninthat‘erevay.I’dlethim.’

           ‘Oh,Idaresayyoudon’tbelieveit,’saidthecobbler,quietlysmokinghispipe.‘Iwouldn’tifIwasyou;butit’strueforallthat.’

           ‘Howwosit?’inquiredSam,halfinducedtobelievethefactalready,bythelookthecobblergavehim.

           ‘Justthis,’repliedthecobbler;‘anoldgentlemanthatIworkedfor,downinthecountry,andahumblerelationofwhoseImarriedshe’sdead,Godblessher,andthankHimforit!wasseizedwithafitandwentoff.’

           ‘Where?’inquiredSam,whowasgrowingsleepyafterthenumerouseventsoftheday.

           ‘HowshouldIknowwherehewent?’saidthecobbler,speakingthroughhisnoseinanintenseenjoymentofhispipe.‘Hewentoffdead.’

           ‘Oh,thatindeed,’saidSam.
