           MrsMerdle,duringthesepassages,saidlittletoFanny,butsaidmoreabouther.Shewas,asitwere,forcedtolookatherthroughhereye-glass,andingeneralconversationtoallowcommendationsofherbeautytobewrungfromherbyitsirresistibledemands.ThedefiantcharacteritassumedwhenFannyheardtheseextollings(asitgenerallyhappenedthatshedid),wasnotexpressiveofconcessionstotheimpartialbosom;buttheutmostrevengethebosomtookwas,tosayaudibly,‘Aspoiltbeauty—butwiththatfaceandshape,whocouldwonder?’

           Itmighthavebeenaboutamonthorsixweeksafterthenightofthenewadvice,whenLittleDorritbegantothinkshedetectedsomenewunderstandingbetweenMrSparklerandFanny.MrSparkler,asifinattendancetosomecompact,scarcelyeverspokewithoutfirstlookingtowardsFannyforleave.Thatyoungladywastoodiscreetevertolookbackagain;but,ifMrSparklerhadpermissiontospeak,sheremainedsilent;ifhehadnot,sheherselfspoke.
