           Theaffairsofthisdebtorwereperplexedbyapartnership,ofwhichheknewnomorethanthathehadinvestedmoneyinit;bylegalmattersofassignmentandsettlement,conveyancehereandconveyancethere,suspicionofunlawfulpreferenceofcreditorsinthisdirection,andofmysteriousspiritingawayofpropertyinthat;andasnobodyonthefaceoftheearthcouldbemoreincapableofexplaininganysingleitemintheheapofconfusionthanthedebtorhimself,nothingcomprehensiblecouldbemadeofhiscase.Toquestionhimindetail,andendeavourtoreconcilehisanswers;toclosethimwithaccountantsandsharppractitioners,learnedinthewilesofinsolvencyandbankruptcy;wasonlytoputthecaseoutatcompoundinterestandincomprehensibility.Theirresolutefingersflutteredmoreandmoreineffectuallyaboutthetremblingliponeverysuchoccasion,andthesharpestpractitionersgavehimupasahopelessjob.

           ‘Out?’saidtheturnkey,‘he’llnevergetout,unlesshiscreditorstakehimbytheshouldersandshovehimout.’
