Ihavenotyetcalledherbyhernameinthisletter,butwearesuchfriendsnowthatIdosowhenwearequietlytogether,andshespeakstomebymyname—Imean,notmyChristianname,butthenameyougaveme.WhenshebegantocallmeAmy,Itoldhermyshortstory,andthatyouhadalwayscalledmeLittleDorrit.Itoldherthatthenamewasmuchdearertomethananyother,andsoshecallsmeLittleDorrittoo.
Perhapsyouhavenotheardfromherfatherormotheryet,andmaynotknowthatshehasababyson.Hewasbornonlytwodaysago,andjustaweekaftertheycame.Ithasmadethemveryhappy.However,Imusttellyou,asIamtotellyouall,thatIfancytheyareunderaconstraintwithMrGowan,andthattheyfeelasifhismockingwaywiththemwassometimesaslightgiventotheirloveforher.Itwasbutyesterday,whenIwasthere,thatIsawMrMeagleschangecolour,andgetupandgoout,asifhewasafraidthathemightsayso,unlesshepreventedhimselfbythatmeans.YetIamsuretheyarebothsoconsiderate,good-humoured,andreasonable,thathemightsparethem.Itishardinhimnottothinkofthemalittlemore.
Istoppedatthelastfullstoptoreadallthisover.ItlookedatfirstasifIwastakingonmyselftounderstandandexplainsomuch,thatIwashalfinclinednottosendit.ButwhenIthoughtitoveralittle,IfeltmorehopefulforyourknowingatoncethatIhadonlybeenwatchfulforyou,andhadonlynoticedwhatIthinkIhavenoticed,becauseIwasquickenedbyyourinterestinit.Indeed,youmaybesurethatisthetruth.
