           Intheintervalsofroastingthepartridgefortheinvalidchamber,andpreparingabaking-dishofbeefandpuddingforthedining-room,MrsAfferymadethecommunicationsabovesetforth;invariablyputtingherheadinatthedooragainaftershehadtakenitout,toenforceresistancetothetwocleverones.ItappearedtohavebecomeaperfectpassionwithMrsFlintwinch,thattheonlysonshouldbepittedagainstthem.

           Inthecourseoftheday,too,Arthurlookedthroughthewholehouse.Dullanddarkhefoundit.Thegauntrooms,desertedforyearsuponyears,seemedtohavesettleddownintoagloomylethargyfromwhichnothingcouldrousethemagain.Thefurniture,atoncespareandlumbering,hidintheroomsratherthanfurnishedthem,andtherewasnocolourinallthehouse;suchcolourashadeverbeenthere,hadlongagostartedawayonlostsunbeams—gotitselfabsorbed,perhaps,intoflowers,butterflies,plumageofbirds,preciousstones,whatnot.
