           Itformedapartofthissameshortdocument;andhederivedfromittheremarkablefactthatthesheetsoffoolscappaperithaddevotedtothepublicservicewouldpavethefootwaysonbothsidesofOxfordStreetfromendtoend,andleavenearlyaquarterofamiletospareforthepark(Immensecheeringandlaughter);whileoftape—redtape—ithadusedenoughtostretch,ingracefulfestoons,fromHydeParkCornertotheGeneralPostOffice.Then,amidstaburstofofficialexultation,wouldthenobleorrighthonourableBarnaclesitdown,leavingthemutilatedfragmentsoftheMemberonthefield.Noone,afterthatexemplarydemolitionofhim,wouldhavethehardihoodtohintthatthemoretheCircumlocutionOfficedid,thelesswasdone,andthatthegreatestblessingitcouldconferonanunhappypublicwouldbetodonothing.

           Withsufficientoccupationonhishands,nowthathehadthisadditionaltask—suchataskhadmanyandmanyaserviceablemandiedofbeforehisday—ArthurClennamledalifeofslightvariety.Regularvisitstohismother’sdullsickroom,andvisitsscarcelylessregulartoMrMeaglesatTwickenham,wereitsonlychangesduringmanymonths.

           HesadlyandsorelymissedLittleDorrit.Hehadbeenpreparedtomissherverymuch,butnotsomuch.Heknewtothefullextentonlythroughexperience,whatalargeplaceinhislifewasleftblankwhenherfamiliarlittlefigurewentoutofit.Hefelt,too,thathemustrelinquishthehopeofitsreturn,understandingthefamilycharactersufficientlywelltobeassuredthatheandsheweredividedbyabroadgroundofseparation.
