           Heattendedthemdownthestaircase,jocoselyapologisingforthepoorquarterstowhichsuchpoorfellowsashimselfwerelimited,andremarkingthatwhenthehighandmightyBarnacles,hisrelatives,whowouldbedreadfullyashamedofthem,presentedhimwithbetter,hewouldliveinbettertoobligethem.Atthewater’sedgetheyweresalutedbyBlandois,wholookedwhiteenoughafterhislateadventure,butwhomadeverylightofitnotwithstanding,—laughingatthementionofLion.

           Leavingthetwotogetherunderthescrapofvineuponthecauseway,Gowanidlyscatteringtheleavesfromitintothewater,andBlandoislightingacigarette,thesisterswerepaddledawayinstateastheyhadcome.Theyhadnotglidedonformanyminutes,whenLittleDorritbecameawarethatFannywasmoreshowyinmannerthantheoccasionappearedtorequire,and,lookingaboutforthecausethroughthewindowandthroughtheopendoor,sawanothergondolaevidentlyinwaitingonthem.

           Asthisgondolaattendedtheirprogressinvariousartfulways;sometimesshootingona-head,andstoppingtoletthempass;sometimes,whenthewaywasbroadenough,skimmingalongsidebysidewiththem;andsometimesfollowingcloseastern;andasFannygraduallymadenodisguisethatshewasplayingoffgracesuponsomebodywithinit,ofwhomsheatthesametimefeignedtobeunconscious;LittleDorritatlengthaskedwhoitwas?

           TowhichFannymadetheshortanswer,‘Thatgaby.’
