           ‘IfMissAmyDorritwilldirectherownattentionto,andwillacceptofmypoorassistancein,theformationofasurface,Mr.Dorritwillhavenofurthercauseofanxiety.MayItakethisopportunityofremarking,asaninstanceinpoint,thatitisscarcelydelicatetolookatvagrantswiththeattentionwhichIhaveseenbestoweduponthembyaverydearyoungfriendofmine?Theyshouldnotbelookedat.Nothingdisagreeableshouldeverbelookedat.Apartfromsuchahabitstandinginthewayofthatgracefulequanimityofsurfacewhichissoexpressiveofgoodbreeding,ithardlyseemscompatiblewithrefinementofmind.Atrulyrefinedmindwillseemtobeignorantoftheexistenceofanythingthatisnotperfectlyproper,placid,andpleasant.’Havingdeliveredthisexaltedsentiment,MrsGeneralmadeasweepingobeisance,andretiredwithanexpressionofmouthindicativeofPrunesandPrism.

           LittleDorrit,whetherspeakingorsilent,hadpreservedherquietearnestnessandherlovinglook.Ithadnotbeenclouded,exceptforapassingmoment,untilnow.Butnowthatshewasleftalonewithhimthefingersofherlightlyfoldedhandswereagitated,andtherewasrepressedemotioninherface.
