           ‘Ihopeso,’returnedherfather.‘I—ha—Imostdevoutlyhopeso,Amy.Isentforyou,inorderthatImightsay—hum—impressivelysay,inthepresenceofMrsGeneral,towhomweareallsomuchindebtedforobliginglybeingpresentamongus,on—ha—onthisoranyotheroccasion,’MrsGeneralshuthereyes,‘thatI—hahum—amnotpleasedwithyou.YoumakeMrsGeneral’sathanklesstask.You—ha—embarrassmeverymuch.Youhavealways(asIhaveinformedMrsGeneral)beenmyfavouritechild;Ihavealwaysmadeyoua—hum—afriendandcompanion;inreturn,Ibeg—I—ha—Idobeg,thatyouaccommodateyourselfbetterto—hum—circumstances,anddutifullydowhatbecomesyour—yourstation.’

           MrDorritwasevenalittlemorefragmentarythanusual,beingexcitedonthesubjectandanxioustomakehimselfparticularlyemphatic.
