           DearMrClennam,Ihavewrittenagreatdealaboutmyself,butImustwritealittlemorestill,orwhatIwantedmostofalltosayinthisweakletterwouldbeleftoutofit.Inallthesefoolishthoughtsofmine,whichIhavebeensohardyastoconfesstoyoubecauseIknowyouwillunderstandmeifanybodycan,andwillmakemoreallowanceformethananybodyelsewouldifyoucannot—inallthesethoughts,thereisonethoughtscarcelyever—never—outofmymemory,andthatisthatIhopeyousometimes,inaquietmoment,haveathoughtforme.Imusttellyouthatastothis,Ihavefelt,eversinceIhavebeenaway,ananxietywhichIamveryanxioustorelieve.Ihavebeenafraidthatyoumaythinkofmeinanewlight,oranewcharacter.Don’tdothat,Icouldnotbearthat—itwouldmakememoreunhappythanyoucansuppose.ItwouldbreakmyhearttobelievethatyouthoughtofmeinanywaythatwouldmakemestrangertoyouthanIwaswhenyouweresogoodtome.WhatIhavetoprayandentreatofyouis,thatyouwillneverthinkofmeasthedaughterofarichperson;thatyouwillneverthinkofmeasdressinganybetter,orlivinganybetter,thanwhenyoufirstknewme
