           ThegorgesoftheSimplon,itsenormousdepthsandthunderingwaterfalls,thewonderfulroad,thepointsofdangerwherealoosewheelorafalteringhorsewouldhavebeendestruction,thedescentintoItaly,theopeningofthatbeautifullandastheruggedmountain-chasmwidenedandletthemoutfromagloomyanddarkimprisonment—alladream—onlytheoldmeanMarshalseaareality.Nay,eventheoldmeanMarshalseawasshakentoitsfoundationswhenshepictureditwithoutherfather.Shecouldscarcelybelievethattheprisonerswerestilllingeringinthecloseyard,thatthemeanroomswerestilleveryonetenanted,andthattheturnkeystillstoodintheLodgelettingpeopleinandout,alljustasshewellknewittobe.

           Witharemembranceofherfather’soldlifeinprisonhangingaboutherliketheburdenofasorrowfultune,LittleDorritwouldwakefromadreamofherbirth-placeintoawholeday’sdream.Thepaintedroominwhichsheawoke,oftenahumbledstate-chamberinadilapidatedpalace,wouldbeginit;withitswildredautumnalvine-leavesoverhangingtheglass,itsorange-treesonthecrackedwhiteterraceoutsidethewindow,agroupofmonksandpeasantsinthelittlestreetbelow,miseryandmagnificencewrestlingwitheachotheruponeveryroodofgroundintheprospect,nomatterhowwidelydiversified,andmiserythrowingmagnificencewiththestrengthoffate.
