           TheCollegianscheeredhimveryheartily,andhekissedhishandtothemwithgreaturbanityandprotection.Whenhewithdrewintotheroomagain,hesaid‘Poorcreatures!’inatoneofmuchpityfortheirmiserablecondition.

           LittleDorritwasdeeplyanxiousthatheshouldliedowntocomposehimself.OnArthur’sspeakingtoherofhisgoingtoinformPancksthathemightnowappearassoonashewould,andpursuethejoyfulbusinesstoitsclose,sheentreatedhiminawhispertostaywithheruntilherfathershouldbequitecalmandatrest.Heneedednosecondentreaty;andshepreparedherfather’sbed,andbeggedhimtoliedown.Foranotherhalf-hourormorehewouldbepersuadedtodonothingbutgoabouttheroom,discussingwithhimselftheprobabilitiesforandagainsttheMarshal’sallowingthewholeoftheprisonerstogotothewindowsoftheofficialresidencewhichcommandedthestreet,toseehimselfandfamilydepartforeverinacarriage—which,hesaid,hethoughtwouldbeaSightforthem.Butgraduallyhebegantodroopandtire,andatlaststretchedhimselfuponthebed.

           Shetookherfaithfulplacebesidehim,fanninghimandcoolinghisforehead;andheseemedtobefallingasleep(alwayswiththemoneyinhishand),whenheunexpectedlysatupandsaid:

           ‘MrClennam,Ibegyourpardon.AmItounderstand,mydearsir,thatIcould—ha—couldpassthroughtheLodgeatthismoment,and—hum—takeawalk?’

           ‘Ithinknot,MrDorrit,’wastheunwillingreply.
