           WhenMrChivery,whowasonduty,admittedthemintotheLodge,hesawsomethingintheirfaceswhichfilledhimwithastonishment.Hestoodlookingafterthem,whentheyhurriedintotheprison,asthoughheperceivedthattheyhadcomebackaccompaniedbyaghosta-piece.TwoorthreeCollegianswhomtheypassed,lookedafterthemtoo,andpresentlyjoiningMrChivery,formedalittlegroupontheLodgesteps,inthemidstofwhichtherespontaneouslyoriginatedawhisperthattheFatherwasgoingtogethisdischarge.Withinafewminutes,itwasheardintheremotestroomintheCollege.

           LittleDorritopenedthedoorfromwithout,andtheybothentered.Hewassittinginhisoldgreygownandhisoldblackcap,inthesunlightbythewindow,readinghisnewspaper.Hisglasseswereinhishand,andhehadjustlookedround;surprisedatfirst,nodoubt,byherstepuponthestairs,notexpectingheruntilnight;surprisedagain,byseeingArthurClennaminhercompany.
