           ‘Besogood,’saidJeremiah,closingthehousedoor,andtakingaprettysharpsurveyofthesmilingvisitorinhisturn,‘astostepintomycounting-house.—It’sallright,Itellyou!’petulantlybreakingofftoanswerthevoiceup-stairs,stillunsatisfied,thoughAfferywasthere,speakinginpersuasivetones.‘Don’tItellyouit’sallright?Preservethewoman,hasshenoreasonatallinher!’

           ‘Timorous,’remarkedthestranger.

           ‘Timorous?’saidMrFlintwinch,turninghisheadtoretort,ashewentbeforewiththecandle.‘Morecourageousthanninetymeninahundred,sir,letmetellyou.’

           ‘Thoughaninvalid?’

           ‘Manyyearsaninvalid.MrsClennam.TheonlyoneofthatnameleftintheHousenow.Mypartner.’

           Sayingsomethingapologeticallyashecrossedthehall,totheeffectthatatthattimeofnighttheywerenotinthehabitofreceivinganyone,andwerealwaysshutup,MrFlintwinchledthewayintohisownoffice,whichpresentedasufficientlybusiness-likeappearance.Hereheputthelightonhisdesk,andsaidtothestranger,withhiswryesttwistuponhim,‘Yourcommands.’

           ‘MynameisBlandois.’

           ‘Blandois.Idon’tknowit,’saidJeremiah.

           ‘Ithoughtitpossible,’resumedtheother,‘thatyoumighthavebeenadvisedfromParis—’

           ‘WehavehadnoadvicefromParisrespectinganybodyofthenameofBlandois,’saidJeremiah.

           ‘No?’

           ‘No.’

           Jeremiahstoodinhisfavouriteattitude.
